My Uncle Alf had a few medical problems in the passed but nothing to bad it was all treatable, he
died in his sleep and his Grandson found him the next morning.
My Uncle Alf was a very well respected man in his community, at the age of 15 he tried to join the
army but they had an idea he was under age so they called for his mother who came and took him
home.
He eventually joined the paratroopers and was dropped into Normandy in advance of the D-Day
landings, after being on the run alone for 15 days he was captured by men of the 21st Penzers and
held prisoner of war in several camps, ending up in Stalag 4b in Germany.
He became a paratrooper with the 13th Paratroop Battalion of the army
Air Corps.
After a spell back home he was posted to Palestine.
He then went to work for a truck firm driving round farms collecting eggs and chickens but after a
short time he joined the RAC road assistance service riding one of the familiar motor cycles with
side cars.
In 1968 he joined the ambulance service in Carlisle and served with it for 21 years until he
retired, During his time he did many things including delivering 11 babies in his ambulance and
becoming the first local paramedic to assist on an Air Ambulance flight from Carlisle to Plymouth,
He rescued a man from a drain after being told it was to dangerous but he said it was all in a days
work, After he retired he became a volunteer driver for age concern and often helped with work for
Down's Syndrome children.
He leaves behind a Daughter, Granddaughter & Grandson, Niece's & Nephews.
